We Can’t Make the Grass Grow

Fall the trees
Remove the roots
Burn the brush
Mud on boots

Chop the logs
Stack them straight
Line the path
Make a way

But we can’t make the grass grow.

Use a plow
Rake the yard
Pull up rocks
The work is hard

Kids help out
Pick up sticks
Spread more soil
Nice and thick

But we can’t make the grass grow.

Then the day
Is finally here
Scatter seed
Through those gears

Move the sprinklers
Every hour
In the Sun
Pray for a shower

But we can’t make the grass grow.

Stomp down hills
Flood the moles
Smooth out tracks
Fill in holes

Stare at the ground
Search for a blade
Germination
On the way?

But we can’t make the grass grow.

Too much control
Work and no play
Too much effort
Can get in the way

Sunday Sabbath
Tried our best
Hoped and prayed
God does the rest

‘Cause we can’t make the grass grow.
